American Cockroach Control
in Toronto.
American cockroach control in Toronto: identify the largest common indoor cockroach, where it hides in basements and drains, and what to record.
Understand what
you’re seeing.
The American cockroach is the largest cockroach commonly found indoors. In Toronto it is more often linked to basements, drains, boiler rooms and commercial buildings than to kitchen cupboards.
Identification & signs
- Adults are about 4 cm (1.5 in) long, reddish brown, with a pale yellow band around the edge of the area behind the head.
- Adults have well-developed wings but seldom fly.
- They prefer dark, moist areas such as basements, crawl spaces, floor drains and utility areas.
- They multiply more slowly than German cockroaches, but they can travel long distances from where they gather, so the source may not be where you see them.

- Keep drains covered or flushed with water, and fix leaks and damp areas.
- Seal gaps around pipes, vents and utility openings where possible.

American cockroaches: common questions.
Is a very large cockroach in my basement an American cockroach?
It may be. Large size and a pale band behind the head suggest an American cockroach, while shiny black insects in damp areas may be oriental cockroaches. A photo helps confirm.
Did it come up from the drain?
American cockroaches often live in sewers and drains and can enter through floor drains and plumbing gaps. Note whether sightings are near a drain.
Do they infest kitchens like German cockroaches?
They can be found anywhere, but they usually prefer damp, dark areas such as basements and utility rooms.
