Understand what
you’re seeing.

Two kinds of moths cause most indoor problems in Toronto homes: pantry moths in kitchen cupboards and clothes moths in closets. They need different approaches, so it helps to know which one you have.

Identification & signs

  • Pantry moths (Indian meal moths) are about 1.2 cm (½ in) long with pale grey and coppery-brown front wings. You often see them flying in the kitchen at night.
  • Pantry moth larvae are whitish caterpillars that leave silk webbing in flour, cereals, nuts, dried fruit, pet food and birdseed.
  • Clothes moths are small, light tan moths that avoid light and hide when disturbed. Only their larvae damage fabric.
  • Clothes moth larvae feed on wool, silk, fur, feathers and other animal fibres, especially items stained with food or body oils.

Practical first steps.

Start with the conditions you can observe. If the activity continues or the pest is uncertain, describe the pattern when requesting an assessment.

  • For pantry moths, find and throw out infested food. Check every package, including ones at the back of shelves and under cans.
  • Vacuum cupboard shelves top and bottom, using a crevice tool, then store dry food in jars or tight-sealing containers.
  • For clothes moths, wash or dry clean clothing, then store clean items in sealed containers or bags.
  • Vacuum closets, rugs and upholstery thoroughly, especially in dark, undisturbed areas.
  • Freeze small items in sealed bags for at least 48 to 72 hours to kill eggs and larvae.

Moths: common questions.

How do I know if I have pantry moths or clothes moths?

Pantry moths are found in the kitchen near stored food, often with webbing in packages. Clothes moths are found in closets and around wool or other natural fabrics, often with small holes in clothing.

Will moth traps get rid of the problem?

Traps can show where moths are active, but they do not remove the larvae. Finding and removing the infested food or fabric is what solves the problem.

Do I need pesticides for pantry moths?

Usually not. Throwing out infested food, cleaning thoroughly and storing food in sealed containers is the main fix.
