Raccoon removal in Toronto: signs of raccoons in the attic, roof or under a deck, how one-way doors and trapping work, Ontario release rules and prices.
Understand what
you’re seeing.
Raccoons are one of the most common wildlife problems in Toronto homes. They look for sheltered, quiet spaces to den, especially in attics, chimneys and under decks, and they can cause real damage getting in.
Identification & signs
- Raccoons den in uncapped chimneys, openings in attics, roofs and eaves, garages, sheds and under decks.
- Signs include thumping or heavy walking sounds at night, torn shingles, soffits or vent covers, and droppings near the entry point.
- Babies may be present between March and July. An entry point should only be sealed once all the raccoons, including young, have left.
- In Ontario, a live-captured nuisance animal must be released within 1 km of where it was caught, within 24 hours. Sick, injured or orphaned wildlife goes to an authorized wildlife rehabilitator.
- Raccoons can carry rabies and canine distemper, so avoid handling or cornering them.

Practical first steps.
Start with the conditions you can observe. If the activity continues or the pest is uncertain, describe the pattern when requesting an assessment.
- Do not block an entry point while an animal may still be inside, especially in spring and early summer.
- Keep garbage in secure bins and store green bins in a garage or shed where possible.
- Do not feed raccoons or leave pet food outside.
- Trim tree branches that give access to the roof, and cap chimneys.
- Note where and when you hear activity, and photograph any damage from the ground.

Raccoons: common questions.
How do you get raccoons out of an attic?
We use a one-way door or live trapping, depending on the animal and the situation. The price includes sealing one entry point; any additional entry points are quoted separately.
Can you move the raccoon somewhere far away?
No. Ontario rules require a live-captured nuisance animal to be released within 1 km of where it was caught, within 24 hours. Sealing the entry point is what keeps it out.
What if there are babies?
Between March and July there may be young in the den. They need to be removed or leave with the mother before the entry point is sealed. Removing babies, when they are present, is an extra $99–$225.
Will raccoons come back?
Raccoons often return to a familiar den if they can. Sealing the entry point and removing attractants such as garbage and pet food reduces the chance of a repeat visit.
